Amazingly animal story 37

I’m sure you’ve seen some post on Facebook going around about a dog that went missing Saturday after a terrible vehicle accident in Grand Chenier LA… well here is MAXI!!
Maxi, a tiny but mighty Chihuahua, was traveling with her owner from California to Florida when their journey took a devastating turn near Joseph Harbor (Rockefeller Refuge). After the accident, her owner was airlifted for emergency care, and frightened little Maxi ran off into the surrounding marsh.
If you know that area, you know it’s no place for a small dog — miles of swamp and marshland filled with predators like alligators, coyotes, wild hogs, and who knows what else. For a 6-pound Chihuahua to survive out there alone for 48 hours? It felt almost impossible.
When Maxi’s owner’s mother reached out and asked if I could bring my drone to help search, I’ll be honest — I prepared myself for the worst. But hope is a powerful thing.
Less than 30 minutes into the flight, I spotted her.
That tiny brown body was curled up on the backside of a thick, overgrown levee, soaked and exhausted. She had somehow swum across a massive tidal canal — something most people would never believe from a Chihuahua. She was laid down, tucked in tight, scared but still fighting.
I hovered the drone right above her so we wouldn’t lose sight, and while she couldn’t hear us approach, we carefully made our way in. When we finally reached her, she was too tired to run. We gently scooped her up and carried her back to the boat.
Back at the truck, Maxi didn’t ask for much. Just water. Food. And safety. After two days alone in that marsh, she drank like she’d never seen water before and ate like it was the best meal of her life.
And then — her little tail started wagging.
That’s the part that gets you. After everything she endured — the crash, the fear, the cold nights — she still had that sweet, trusting Chihuahua spirit.
I’m beyond grateful we were able to bring Maxi back to her family. Their healing journey is just beginning, but tonight, they have their baby back.
If you could keep this family in your prayers, it would mean the world. Her owner is facing a long recovery, and Maxi has some healing of her own to do — but they’re alive, and they’re together.
Moments like this remind me why I love what I do. Every rescue has its own wild story… and this one is proof that even the smallest dogs can have the biggest fight in them.
